To build a successful career you need knowledge, passion, determination, drive, and some luck. But, you probably won’t get where you want to go without growing your professional network.

And networking has never been easier and more accessible than today. There are plenty of events you can attend (online and in-person), and there’s LinkedIn. This makes networking easier, but there are still things you can do to stand out in the crowd and make a good impression.

Don’t Rush

When you first start talking to someone, don’t be aggressive. You still want to steer the conversation in the direction that suits you, but if you shoot straight for what YOU need you can come across as off-putting.

Instead, focus on the other person and show genuine interest. Make eye contact, ask questions, and listen carefully to what they’re saying.

Don’t Overtalk

We all like to talk about ourselves and our lives, but you shouldn’t forget that conversation flows both ways. While networking, you should ask questions that have a purpose. Ask about the other person’s business, and what they’re specializing in, and try to figure out how you can help each other.

It’s nice to talk about some of the more personal things once you’ve already met someone, but you shouldn’t start talking about your kids and pets straight away.

Prepare Your Information

Have your information ready for sharing. Whether you’re using regular business cards or an e-business card, you should be prepared to share it when needed.
