Kabul, October 7, 2023
A series of earthquakes rocked western Afghanistan today, sending tremors through the region and causing panic among residents. The National Center for Seismology reported that the largest quake had a magnitude of 6.2, while two others measured 6.1 and 5.6, respectively. These seismic events occurred within a span of just over half an hour, from 12:11 pm to 12:42 pm IST.
The Tremors Felt
The first tremor, with a magnitude of 6.1, struck at 12:11 pm IST, shaking buildings and prompting people to rush out of their homes in fear. Just eight minutes later, at 12:19 pm IST, another significant quake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale jolted the region once more. The third and most powerful quake, with a magnitude of 6.2, hit at 12:42 pm IST, leaving residents in a state of shock.
The epicenter of these earthquakes was located in Afghanistan, with coordinates at 34.81 degrees latitude and 61.99 degrees longitude. The depth of the seismic activity was recorded at 38 kilometers below the Earth’s surface. Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage to infrastructure in the affected areas.
The tremors were also felt in neighbouring Nepal, where a magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck at 11:30 am IST, just prior to the series of quakes in Afghanistan. The epicenter of the Nepalese earthquake was situated at 29.35 degrees latitude and 81.30 degrees longitude, with a depth of 10 kilometers. Although this quake was of a lower magnitude, it added to the overall anxiety in the region.
The Current Situation
Authorities in Afghanistan and Nepal are closely monitoring the earthquake situation, with emergency response teams ready to assess damage and assist residents. Safety protocols advise residents to stay outdoors in open spaces and avoid tall buildings. These Asian regions frequently experience earthquakes due to complex tectonic activity, especially along the Himalayan fault line. Preparedness and public awareness campaigns play a vital role in mitigating the impact of these recurring natural disasters.
While no significant damage has been reported thus far, the situation is fluid, and updates will continue to be provided as more information becomes available. It is crucial for residents to stay informed and heed any guidance from local authorities to ensure their safety during this period of heightened seismic activity.
