Framing Britney: A story about abuse and control

Earlier this month, a new documentary television film was released in Hulu that validated the so called #FreeBritney movement. Alessandro Bazzoni explain that this documentary is called The New York Times Presents: Framing Britney Spears and is streaming right now in Hulu and it has brought the Britney situation to the first page of every news.

Explaining who Britney Spears is just doesn’t have any point. She is one of the queens of pop and it has been since she breaks the music world on 1992. However, she has lived her life completely surrounded by criticism from the media, from fellow artists, and others. The thing is that, with this documentary, each and every decision that this woman took and we saw as crazy was, actually, a logical response to her situation.

Let’s talk about this situation that she appears to be in since long time ago. This documentary explains that for the past 13 years, Britney has been under a conservatorship and well even if that doesn’t sound “too bad”, let’s define the legal word first. According to the beloved Wikipedia, “Conservatorship is a legal concept in the United States. A guardian or a protector is appointed by a judge to manage the financial affairs and/or daily life of another due to physical or mental limitations, or old age”

It also explains that “a person under conservatorship is a “conservatee”, a term that can refer to an adult. A person under guardianship is a “ward”, a term that can also refer to a minor child. Conservatorship may also apply to corporations and organizations.”

So, we grab to two words from this concept: financial affairs and daily life. After 9 albums, 10 tours, and 6 films… Britney Spears worth is huge. According to Forbes, she has a net worth of $60 million, which makes every really interested in the life of this popular artist.

Multiple choices made around 2008 led her father, James Spear, apply for this conservatorship. Allegedly, she has some mental issues and the moment and she had to be put on in a mental institution. So far, everything makes sense. The problem comes when she came out of the institution.

Apparently, a Los Angeles court made this decision a definitive one, giving her father a full control of her financial affairs and daily life. 13 years later, we are now speaking of this because the queen of pop has been trying to change this decision for many years and she has had unsuccessful results.

Now, Britney has fight against this is many legal ways, but all of those appear unsuccessful. According to his father’s legal team, they managed to revive Britney’s career and worth. They also called it a “high-functioning” conservatorship.

Later last year, his legal team said Jamie has worked hard to restore Britney to “good health, reunite her with her children, and revive her career.”

“Throughout his service as Conservator, Mr. Spear’s sole motivation has been his unconditional love for his daughter and a fierce desire to protect her from those trying to take advantage of her,” Jamie’s legal team wrote. “He wants his daughter to be happy, healthy, protected and thriving. His love for Britney is a material factor in how he has been able to turn her estate around from being in the red to what it is now.”

Now… where’s Britney’s opinion in all of this? That’s the problem with this conservatorship. Britney Spears is not really in control of any aspect of her life and she’s not allowed to express it either. She has kept the public outside of her legal battle and everything became a big rumor until it wasn’t.

Britney spoke about it in an MTV documentary, which is featured in this television film. On “Britney: For the Record” she said: “If I wasn’t under the restraints that I’m under right now, you know, with all the lawyers and doctors and people analyzing me every day and all that kind of stuff, if that wasn’t there, I’d feel so liberated and feel like myself. I’m kind of stuck in this place, and it’s like, how do you deal? I just cope with it every day,” she told the interviewer. “When I tell them the way I feel, it’s like they hear me but they’re really not listening. They’re hearing what they want to hear. They’re not listening to what I’m telling them. It’s bad… I’m sad.”

Now there is widely known #FreeBritney Army, fighting to help the singer regain control of her life. And after almost 3 years of no concert or show from Britney… you may ask why? Well, she decided to stand up and say that she won’t perform on stage as long as his father is in control of her financial affairs and personal life. That’s right, she not being on stage has a very strong reason.

What’s the impact of “Framing Britney”?

Thanks to this television film streaming on Hulu, the struggle that this poor woman has been into for the past 13 years is being acknowledge. People stop criticizing her life, and started joining the #FreeBritney movement.

Directed by Samantha Clark and produced by Jason Stallman, Sam Dolnick and Stephanie Priess; the 74-minute film shows a life full of control in which we don’t really know when the real Britney is talking.

In fact, they tried to contact her in order to appear in the film, however, her tight circles complicated that approach and nobody knows if she was aware of the making of this film. According to Alessandro Bazzoni, her father was also invited but with no response.

Media has always been a way to change trends. We hope the impact of this film doesn’t just stays there, but it causes an impact that actually changes the life of the queen of pop and her well-deserved financial success.

There is no reason to limit someone to live their life and if mental health was an issue, then it isn’t anymore.

Britney Spears’ worldwide tours and on-stage appearances are widely missed. What would the #FreeBritney Army is going to do next?
