The country maintained a steady addition to its wind power generation capacity owing to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and turbine manufacturers like ReNew Power, Sembcorp, Adani, Siemens and GE.
2020 has been a slow year for wind power in India, with just 1.1GW being added to its wind power capacity. However, it does not tell the whole story. Despite the odds, India managed to increase the share of Renewable Energy (RE) in power generation to 10.1% from 9.4% the previous year.
The country maintained a steady addition to its wind power generation capacity owing to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and turbine manufacturers like ReNew Power, Sembcorp, Adani, Siemens and GE.
ReNew Power commissioned a 300 MW wind power facility at Kutch, Gujarat, bringing its total wind energy capacity in the state to 950MW. Gujarat has been a preferred destination for energy companies as Adani Green Energy also choose the state for the site of its 100MW project. The plant, also located in Kutch, was commissioned five months ahead of time, underlining the fervent pace of wind power’s feasibility in the country.
Sembcorp Energy was another contributor, commissioning a total of 800MW wind projects in Tamil Nadu and Gujarat – a 250MW plant in Tamil Nadu’s Tuticorin and a 250MW and 300MW plants in Bhuj, Gujarat. The equipment for these projects was provided by Suzlon and Siemens Gamesa.
Siemens has proved to be a valuable supplier when it comes to wind projects. Contracts have been awarded by Renew Power and Adani to Siemens in the past, all of which have been closed successfully. Siemens supplied 567MW to ReNew Power for its two projects in Gujarat and Karnataka in 2019 and another 176.8MW in 2018.
Several contracts for wind projects were assigned by Adani to Siemens, the most notable of which was the Fatehgarh wind farm in Rajasthan. Wind turbines totaling 473MW were delivered by Siemens under the contract, bringing the total contracted capacity between Adani and Siemens to 840MW.
India’s RE outlook for the future looks bright. Even though 2020 has been a challenging year, experts believe that at least 3.2GW of new wind capacity is likely to be added this fiscal. Companies like ReNew Power, Sembcorp, Alfanar and Adani Green Energy, which accounted for at least 70% of installed capacity in 2020, will be relied on to lead the way.
