Making The Most of Your First Family Snow Trip

Planning a family snow trip is exciting. Everyone wants the trip to be all they have dreamed of. By preparing ahead of time, family members ensure they don’t leave anything at home that would lessen their enjoyment of the snow. What should a family prepare for ahead of time?

Snow Toys

Casago’s vacation rentals may or may not have snow toys for the children. Look for this information when booking the rental. If no snow toys are available, bring some. Very young children will enjoy molds to help them make snow blocks, and toy snow shovels are another good option for this age group. Bring snowball molds for the older kids so they can create an ammo stash, and snow-tossers are always a good buy. Sleds and snow tubes are a must for the entire family. Be sure to have one for every child so arguments don’t ruin what is supposed to be good family fun.

Organize Lessons

If children will be hitting the slopes for the first time, be sure they know what to do. Most places today offer ski and snowboarding lessons. Set aside time for the kids to take part in those lessons. Nobody wants to get hurt while on vacation, and the lessons reduce the risk of this happening. It never hurts to sign parents up for lessons too, particularly if they haven’t been on the slopes in a while. A quick refresher never hurt anyone.

Don’t Forget the Essentials

Certain things should go on every trip, regardless of their destination. They include ID and credit cards, and sunscreen is necessary when out in the snow, as the snow reflects the rays of the sun. A person can easily get sunburned when out on the ski slopes all day, although many people forget this until the fun is done and they are hurting from the sunburn. Lip balm is needed for the same reason. Always bring charging cords for electronic devices, and don’t forget a camera to capture the memories that are being made.

Plan Activities That Don’t Involve the Snow

Although it is fun to play in the snow, particularly when the family doesn’t live in an area that sees snow regularly, there are times when the kids and parents need a break. Learn about other family activities for times when the weather isn’t cooperating or family members want to do something different for a while. By knowing what is available in an area before leaving on the trip, the parents can ensure there is less downtime when kids may fight or become bored.

Snow Clothing

People often pack an oversized parka and snow pants and believe they will be fine out in the snow. However, to prepare properly for cold temperatures, people need to dress in layers. Thermal underwear should be worn under the pants and shirt, as they provide a base layer. Once the shirt and pants are on, the person may want to put on a fleece jacket before the insulated snow jacket and pants. Snow socks are needed along with footwear that is appropriate for the weather. Don’t forget the finishing touches. A hat, gloves, and scarf will ensure everyone stays warm while playing in the snow.

Before leaving home, do a quick check to ensure nothing is missed. Doing so ensures that, when the family arrives at the destination, everyone can quickly jump in and take part in the fun. With the right planning, the hardest part of the entire vacation may be getting everyone to go home.
