As mutants continue to surface across the Multiverse Saga, the X-Men movies are becoming more and more relevant, but for those who wish to watch them again, there are a few different ordering options. There are thirteen films in the Fox Marvel cinematic universe, with The New Mutants from 2020 being the newest and X-Men from 2000 being the oldest. These movies tell the tales of numerous X-Men characters from the comics, some of which primarily center on Wolverine and Deadpool, two of the most beloved characters.

The thirteen X-Men films feature numerous time jumps from 1944 to 2029, more than eighty years later. It may be challenging to follow the continuity of the Fox X-Men films, given the number of prequels and reboots that this chronology has. With their time-traveling elements and multiple characters appearing, these films have complex plots. Still, they do an amazing job concentrating on expanding the X-Men universe. Based on the release date sequence and movie schedules, there are two different ways to view the X-Men movies listed below.

watch the X-Men films in chronological order

Once X-Men Origins: Wolverine is mentioned, the release order of these movies becomes rather jumbled with the timeframe. It is common in popular franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), where it also occurs frequently, and the Star Wars series, where the original trilogy takes place after the prequels despite being released much earlier. The standalone films starring Wolverine and Deadpool maintain their ties to the X-Men franchise, although their narratives don’t truly carry on the group films’ plotlines.

In particular, Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool films, as none of the other films include his character. Reynolds does, however, play a considerably less comically accurate version of Deadpool in Wolverine’s first standalone film, but that version of the character is not followed in the solo films.

It’s important to note that following the first X-Men trilogy, the subsequent X-Men films mostly stick with the original cast, although a bigger emphasis is given to their formative years and the creation of the X-Men team. They place more emphasis on the past and the history of mutants. Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier, and Ian McKellen’s Magneto have significant roles in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Still, aside from them, most of the characters are played by new actors or don’t appear.

Watch the X-Men Movies in Series

It does provide a different viewing experience to see the franchise in order as it begins with the origins and early years before moving into epic battles with armies of mutants. The X-history Men is covered in the first half of the list, from their founding until X-Men: The Last Stand’s decisive conflict. Following that, it focuses primarily on the Wolverine and Deadpool characters and may or may not continue with the group. Even if the timeline of these films has been placed in chronological order, it is still incredibly challenging to follow.

The New Mutants, the most recent Marvel film released outside of the MCU in 2020, has little to no impact on the overall chronology of the series. Similar to the two Deadpool movies in this universe, it focuses on its plot outside the X-Men. These three films can be seen whenever you want without giving away the plot of the other films.
