But on the field, the fight was even, and South Grand Prairie muscled its way to a 38-14 victory after an explosive second half increased a five-point halftime lead. Head coach Brent Whitson said the win not only proves how strong 8-6A is but also how much fight his team has.

“There’s character behind the uniforms and the helmets,” he said, adding that the team’s rallying cry this week was “Don’t break this family up. We want to keep playing together.”

Quarterback Sean Stegall opened the third quarter with his longest pass of the game, a 61-yard strike to tight end LaDarrian Hights that set up a 10-yard touchdown run by Javarius Crawford. Stegall finished the night with 197 passing yards and two touchdowns, both of which went to receiver Josh Nicholson. On the ground, Javarius Crawford led the Warriors with 72 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

The key was slowing down a Lake Highlands offense that had previously averaged 45.6 points and 308 rushing yards per game. Running back Noelle Whitehead, who entered the postseason as the second-most productive rusher among area 6A teams with 1,450 yards, gained just 75 yards while quarterback Mitch Coulson managed only 116 rushing and 97 passing yards.

Early in the first half, Lake Highlands looked like it had the potential to extend its perfect season. Coulson turned a sack-escaping scramble into a 35-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter, and Whitehead added a score on a 10-yard carry in the second quarter to give the Wildcats a 14-7 lead, but the South Grand Prairie defense sealed a second-half shutout.

The win over Lake Highlands means South Grand Prairie has to face the only remaining undefeated team in Region I: Allen.

The Warriors will play the five-time state champions next week in the area round of the playoffs, and Allen will be looking to extend its postseason after an uncharacteristically early exit in the second round of the 2019 playoffs.
