Cedar Park: Advanced with a 51-15 win over Richmond Foster. The 11-5A-1 district champions have allowed only 6As Austin Vandegrift and Round Rock Cedar Ridge to stay within 14 points this season. The Timberwolves’ defense is allowing 14.7 ppg. Cedar Park HC Carl Abseck is 68-9 overall.
New Braunfels Canyon: Advanced to third round with forfeit victory over Katy Paetow. Canyon is in the regional semifinal after dropping down from 6A. Their only loss this season was to Dripping Springs in the district opener. The Cougars have won eight straight since. NB Canyon is allowing 16.0 ppg this season.
GAME PREVIEW
Quarterbacks: Cougar senior Dallas Gomez leads an offense that prefers to keep the ball on the ground. In Canyon’s lone playoff game — the Cougars received a forfeit last week when Katy Paetow was forced to cancel — he completed 3 of 5 for 54 yards in a 20-17 bidistrict victory over Pflugerville. … Central Texas player of the year candidate Ryder Hernandez has 43 touchdown passes and just one interception that he threw in last week’s 51-15 area playoff victory over Richmond Foster.
Other offense: The Timberwolves will be keying on RB Micah Williford, who rushed for 158 yards and a TD against Pflugerville. He has rushed for more than 100 yards in all but one game this season and has 24 TDs. … Cedar Park RBs Cade Haught and Kevin Adams have combined for 113 yards per game and 16 TDs. Senior WRs Gunnar Abseck and Jack Hestera have combined for 90 catches and 22 touchdowns.
Defense: With LB Caden Holt (8.8 tackles per game, three sacks), Canyon allows only 19 ppg. Pflugerville had success against the Cougars, gaining 300 yards of total offense. … The Timberwolves allow 14.7 points per game with a defense that is centered by LB Shelby Battles (11.8 tackles per game). Defensive ends Hunter Hewitt and Ian Ferguson have combined for 20 QB sacks.
Special teams: Canyon PK Cameron Welch has made all seven of his FG attempts, including one from 49 yards in an early-season victory over San Antonio Clark. … Cedar Park PK Justin Bohrer is 6 for 7 on FG attempts and is 64 for 64 on PATs. Tristan Hervey had a 90-yard kickoff return for a TD in the victory over Foster and averages 33 yards a return.
Intangibles: In an amazing turnaround, the Cougars have won 11 games after going 0-10 last year. Improvement was expected with the return of 10 defensive starters. Holt, who had 13 tackles in the game against Pflugerville, is the team’s defensive leader. … The Timberwolves have outscored their opponents by 39 points a game. Playing on the road, they cannot afford a letdown against a team that wants to spoil their season.
