The first game of inauguration day will be between the Fordham Rams (1-5, 1-5 A10) and the Davidson Wildcats (8-5, 4-2 A10). Fordham, who has only played conference games, enters this afternoon’s contest on a five-game losing streak. Davidson looks to extend a two-game winning streak against the A10’s worst offensive team.
Fordham’s last game was a 65-46 loss to UMass. Joel Soriano recorded a 12 point, 12 rebound double-double, but the Rams could not overcome shooting 2-11 from the three-point line and 6-15 from the free throw line. Chris Austin chipped in 10 points for Fordham, who found themselves down 44-15 at the half.
Davidson is coming off an easy 77-53 win over LaSalle. Carter Collins scored a career-high 24 points, and Luka Brajkovic added 17 points for the Wildcats. Davidson led 44-23 at the half, and cruised through the second half with a large lead.
Davidson is the obvious favorite in this game given the offensive struggles for Fordham. We will break down this match up to see if Fordham can cover the spread.
Struggles Abound for Fordham
The Rams enter today’s contest as the worst offensive team in the Atlantic 10 conference, and one of the worst offensive teams in the nation. Fordham averages just 49.8 ppg, while shooting 34.5% from the field and 42.2% from inside the arc, and 22.8% from beyond the arc. All of those rank last in the A10. Defensively, the Rams are middle of the road in the A10, but even that is not enough to make up for their offensive ineptness. The Rams are led by Chris Austin, who averages 11.0 ppg while shooting 31.3% from beyond the arc. Joel Soriano averages a double-double for Fordham, scoring 11.0 ppg while grabbing 10.0 rpg.
Davidson Must Not Take Fordham Lightly to Avoid Big Upset
College basketball is renowned for massive upsets, and a Davidson loss to Fordham would be a big upset if it were to happen. Davidson, the 16.5 point favorite, is a much better team, especially on the offensive end. The Wildcats average 72.8 ppg (5th-A10) while shooting 47.3% from the field (2nd) and 35.3% from beyond the arc (4th).
