Lawmakers call: FTC to investigate Apple and Google over mobile tracking

four Republican congressmen called on the Federal Trade Commission to look into Apple and Google’s smartphone targeting methods for those seeking abortions.

In a statement to FTC Chair Lina Khan, Senators Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Cory Booker of New Jersey, Ron Wyden of Oregon, and Sara Jacobs of California said that Apple and Google had amassed and sold “hundreds and thousands of smartphone customers’ information.”

The senators claimed that it is crucial that their information will not get up into the inappropriate hands of those pursuing abortion procedures in areas where doing so would be against the legislation. The Supreme Court’s Friday 5-4 verdict to reverse Roe v. Wade and declare abortion law to be a regional issue has the country reeling as we write this message. Abortion-related trigger legislation has previously been passed in several jurisdictions.

Authorities Claimed

In the message, the author raises worry about the “uncontrolled database brokerage business” and worries that national reward regulations, like the one in Texas, may encourage people to locate abortion seekers using geolocation details taken from dubious database brokers.

The lawmakers stated, “The FTC should look into Apple and Google’s involvement in converting internet marketing into a harsh monitoring program that promotes and supports the unrestricted capture and ongoing selling of Americans’ info.”

The document said that “tracking number IDs” were included in Apple and Google’s smartphone running systems. These “signifiers” include data on the mobility and surfing habits of smartphone subscribers, which may be bought or obtained from the internet advertising and application programmers.

“The whereabouts of those who frequent abortion clinics are currently being sold, licensed, and shared by marketing companies to anybody with a payment method. Eventually, authorities in jurisdictions that outlaw abortion will be allowed to get orders for the addresses of anybody who has attended an abortion facility “the legislators penned. Editor’s seeking comments were not quickly answered by Apple or Google officials.
