Anne Fletcher, the film’s director, describes the film’s bizarre, universe-altering Easter egg. Disney’s Hocus Pocus, starring Bette Midler, bombed at the theaters and with reviewers when it was released in 1993. A cult audience developed for the film, however, and has since become a staple of the Halloween film canon. The 1993 film Hocus Pocus, about three witches from Salem who would be returned to life and cause havoc in modern-day America, is among Midler’s all-time favorite cinematic roles.

Hocus Pocus 2, in the works for a long time after the original, will premiere on Disney+ in 2022. Midler, Kathy Najimy, Sarah Jessica Parker, & Doug Jones all return as their characters for another round of Halloween antics in this new flick. There are many connections to the first film in Hocus Pocus 2, though one Easter egg had audiences confused and wondering what was going on. Buckingham suggests that in the alternate reality where Hocus Pocus takes place, its events were turned into a film and subsequently became popular culture.

Fletcher’s justification for that Hocus Pocus 2 TV scene does give some tenderness to it, even though it is still a strange Easter egg. Many people were deeply saddened by the passing of Garry Marshall in 2016 & Penny Marshall in 2018; both had modest but significant roles in the initial Hocus Pocus, and their deaths came as a shock. Even though many people at the time didn’t get Hocus Pocus, the film has since received much greater satisfaction and it is still warmly welcomed each Halloween. This is all thanks to Buckingham’s in-universe theory. There were many nods to the fact that it has outlived its original reception and evolved into something truly exceptional in Hocus Pocus 2.
