The Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace in Sydney, a renowned heritage theatre in Australia, is screening “Avatar: The Way of Water” using a recently installed laser projection system from Christie Digital Systems as the movie approaches the $1 billion mark in worldwide box office receipts.
The 700-seat Orpheum auditorium of the theatre houses an advanced-format cinema projector with Christie Real|Laser technology that can now display high-frame-rate titles in 4K resolution at 120 frames per second. This screen is 13 meters (42.6 feet) wide.
The installation provides a comparison of the old and new. The projection system’s construction and processing capabilities prevent the common motion blur of giant-screen theatres, while the auditorium, built in 1935, impresses with its distinctive art deco style.
The HOYTS Cinema Technology Group team, led by general manager Adam Wrightson and technical manager Bruce Ker, ordered the new projector.
Sam Hanson, the operations manager at Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace, and Oliver Halicki, his assistant, both took part in the setup and planning. The projector’s 45,000 lumens are made to offer clear images.
Alex Temesvari, general manager of Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace, stated, “We’re thrilled to equip The Orpheum—the largest auditorium in our cinema complex—with the Christie CP4440-RGB, which redefines the premium moviegoing experience with wonderfully vivid and detailed, lifelike 4K visuals. “Avatar: The Way of Water” screenings include simply mind-blowing visuals of the highest caliber. We’re honored to be Sydney’s only theatre showing this blockbuster movie in high-frame-rate 3D exclusively.
“Christie’s CineLife+ Series movie projectors boasting the most cutting-edge electronics are at the forefront of modern cinema technologies,” continued Han Kim, executive director of Christie’s Asia-Pacific region. We are happy that the Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace’s installation of the CP4440-RGB has demonstrated its viability as a high-performance projection system that offers a new world of color and contrast in addition to high efficiency and long operational life.
