Airsoft is gaining increasing popularity and a constantly expanding fan base—all this because almost everyone can find something compelling in this fun pastime! It is an activity that not only moves us physically but also gives us a chance to meet new people, exercise tactical thinking, and expand our knowledge of the world of militaria, and it is often also a great activity for history buffs!
What is airsoft?
Airsoft, or “ASG,” are two terms used interchangeably for all activities related to replicas of firearms—special weapons designed for this particular sport. Their appearance is supposed to reflect the appearance of real firearms used by the military and other uniformed and special forces. There are also replicas of weapons that accompany the heroes of cult-status movies, books, or Sci-Fi series. The airsoft guns family includes various types of airsoft sniper rifles and carbines, submachine guns, revolvers, shotguns, and even grenade launchers. They are made on a 1: 1 scale and look very realistic. And, best of all, you can actually take shots using them!
Airsoft guns are used in so-called “shooters,” where two teams compete against each other, sometimes reenacting scenarios of real battles that took place in more or less recent history, for example, reconstructing fights with the Taliban or famous engagements in Vietnam. These skirmishes can go on for a whole day or even take up an entire weekend and are called Mil-Sims. Realistic scenography plays an important role in Mil-Sims, i.e., military uniforms, helmets, trenches, barracks, and sometimes even tanks!
Mil-Sims are an advanced form of airsoft shooters and require huge organizational efforts, which is why this type of event is not organized very often. Much more popular are skirmishes lasting up to several hours, played out in forested areas and requiring only basic equipment. They are organized cyclically and can also utilize various scenarios, in order to make them more fun. Shooters can (and often are) organized in abandoned warehouses or factories. Those are called “CQB” (Close Quarter Battles) and involve limits imposed on the power of the airsoft guns used.
What do we need to join the battle?
Airsoft guns don’t require any sort of permit – so you can buy them freely and (recommended) right now! The Internet is home to shops such as Gunfire.com, that specialize in airsoft guns. They also offer plastic BBs (ammunition) and protective glasses – which is the complete set of basic airsoft equipment. Of course, you can also purchase other tactical accessories, often used by airsoft combatants. When it comes to physical preparations, we can adjust the type of shooter scenario to our capabilities. People who are just starting their adventure with airsoft have the option to use the services of companies that professionally organize shooters. This is a great option, as you can rent all the necessary equipment and get a short training in its use. Thanks to this, we do not need any experience to start an airsoft game – right away.
