“Ember,” a Sergio Pablos-directed hand-animated movie, will not be released on Netflix.

It follows executive producer Ava DuVernay’s “Wings of Fire,” the kid-friendly “Antiracist Baby,” and “With Kind Regards From Kindergarten” earlier this year as the latest animated film to be dropped from the streamer.

Netflix sources claim that “Ember” and the other animation projects that were previously shelved were chosen for their creative merit rather than their financial feasibility. Animated TV series and films take longer to produce than live-action ones. Because of the lengthy production schedule, putting projects back into development or completely separate ways is not unusual.

Pablos will be free to sell “Ember” elsewhere because he still owns its rights. Veteran animator Pablos founded SPA Studios and created the designs for popular animated series, including “Despicable Me” and “Smallfoot.” “Klaus,” a Christmas-themed animated feature film from Netflix, was written and directed by him. It earned favorable reviews and was nominated for the Best Animated Feature Oscar.

Over the summer, Netflix revealed intentions to produce “Ember,” which is still in the works. An “epic adventure tale about humankind’s search for fire portrayed through the eyes of little Dikika who starts on an impossibly fast journey to a remote volcano in search of the priceless spark that would save her tribe” is how the plot is described.

Netflix sources emphasize that the firm is dedicated to producing movies and television shows for children and families. “Wendell & Wild,” “Pinocchio” by Guillermo del Toro, and “Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical” are recent and future releases.
