The second Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves trailer confirms the participation of two major D&D figures whose presence in the film significantly impacts the plot.
The narrative of Paramount’s live-action Dungeons & Dragons adaption appears to revolve around a group of original characters. While the protagonists are new to the D&D universe, not everyone in the film was created expressly for this plot.
The trailers have provided numerous indications regarding the various challenges they’ll face on their trip, in addition to providing a glance at what to expect from the party of heroes taking center stage in Honor Among Thieves.
Several are monsters from Dungeons & Dragons mythos, such as mimics, displacer animals, and others. On top of that, the group will encounter two villains who were previously identified as existing Dungeons & Dragons canon characters. Here’s who they are and what their appearance in the film implies for the tale of Honor Among Thieves.
Fat Red Dragon of Themberchaud, Honor Among Thieves
Following a brief appearance of the red dragon in the first Honor Among Thieves trailer, Paramount has released a far more detailed look at the creature.
The massive frame of the creature in the clip indicates that it isn’t just any dragon; Honor Among Thieves is set to feature a live-action rendition of Themberchaud, a monster known as a fat, red dragon. Themberchaud lives in the Underdark, an important area in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting.
The Underdark is a vast underground cavern with monsters and perhaps entire civilizations. The Duergar, a subterranean dwarven species with a nasty reputation, are among the inhabitants of the Underdark. The Keepers of the Flame are a group of Duergar who act as Themberchaud’s allies.
It was established in the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop game that the Keepers of the Flame forge their weapons with Themberchaud’s flaming breath. In exchange for his assistance, the Duergar feed him slaves, which explains his look. Even though this arrangement benefited both parties, conflicts between the dragon and the dwarves could not be averted. Because of their terrible natures, Themberchaud and the Duergar secretly plotted against each other.
Honor Among Thieves Lich Szass Tam Explained
The Honor Among Thieves trailer contains a quick glimpse of a zombie-like beast. The creature in question is Szass Tam, a major evil in the Dungeons & Dragons world, as revealed by his crimson clothes and the connection to the Red Wizards.
The Red Wizards of Thay are a group of evil, arcane spellcasters dedicated to one day creating a world overrun with the undead. Szass Tam, the leader they seek, was formerly a necromancer and the cruel king of Thay, one of the many countries in the Forgotten Realms.
Szass Tam was resurrected as a lich after his death. Liches are immensely powerful spellcasters famous for their unrivaled mastery of dark magic and are considered one of the strongest undead monsters in the Dungeons & Dragons universe.
Not only can liches cast an astonishing array of high-level spells, but they also have several other skills that make it extremely tough to bring them down in a fight. Only experienced groups can usually defeat them. Making the most of his lich position, Szass Tam expanded his dominance and led the Red Wizards to grow his zombie army and attack neighboring nations.
