Kitchens are, in almost every household, where most of the housework will be carried out. They are the ‘engines’ of a home. You prepare food there, cook your meals there, do your washing up there, wash your clothes there, so it’s no surprise that they can get run down over time.

But there are aspects to consider when the time comes to rejuvenate your kitchen that can improve the room’s functionality. So, no matter if you just moved in and are looking to overhaul it or if it’s an old family home needing some TLC – we got you covered.

Replace The Radiator

Let’s face the harsh truth that, if you have a radiator in your kitchen, it is most likely getting in the way. If you have a particularly old radiator then it may be time to upgrade – but why just get another radiator?

When it comes to the kitchen radiators are placed there to warm up or dry hand towels, or as a secondary function, to keep the room warm. You can accomplish all of this, and save space, with a heated towel rail.

There are all kinds of heated towel rails out there with varying degrees of power. If you only need it for drying purposes, then a lower powered rail will do you just fine. If you need to heat up the room too, the higher-powered rails are capable of doing just that.

A heated towel rail can be a welcome and stylish addition to any kitchen – even if you aren’t replacing a radiator!

Build In Some Utility Racks

Nothing is worse than having that one top-heavy utensil that topples the whole utility rack. It is even worse when using a stand. Ditch them! Building your own utility racks into the wall is the way forward.

Even if you aren’t going for a full-blown renovation of the kitchen, adding a few hooks, or building a stainless-steel rack into the wall isn’t all that hard. Of course, if renting, then get permission beforehand.

Use A Basin For Washing Up

This tip may seem like a strange one but is surprisingly effective. Using a basin in the sink while washing up (if you don’t already use one) is a good way to prolong the life of your sink. It also means that you can prevent food from escaping down the plughole – prolonging the life of your plumbing too.

Having a basin also means that your sink will be easier to clean. Not to mention it stops people pouring drinks over dirty dishes!

Build Your Appliances Into Your Countertops

While many modern kitchens already do this, it is surprising how many kitchens don’t yet have this functionality.

While this could be argued as a purely aesthetic overhaul, it can have a functional use too – such as keeping plumbing and piping well hidden away from children or pets.

It is also a good way to keep both pets and children safe, by building your appliances into a counter with a closable door across their front face. Again – keeping people and animals out of there that shouldn’t be in there in the first place!
