Rian Johnson explains why he wasn’t initially fond of the dramatic Andi surprise in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. The follow-up to 2019’s Knives Out debuted on Netflix in December to positive reviews from critics and consumers. It follows Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) as he becomes involved in a probe into computer tycoon Miles Bron (Edward Norton) and his cronies on a remote Greek island. One of the movie’s main secrets is unveiled after a startling death derails what was intended to be a weekend-long murder investigation game: Miles’ former business colleague Cassandra “Andi” Brand (Janelle Monáe), who everyone was shocked to see in attendance, is her identical twin sister, Helen.
The Andi-Helen twist in Glass Onion was crucial to the movie’s mystery. Still, Johnson recently discussed his reasons for not wanting to include it in an interview with The Wrap. When discussing the positioning of the big reveal, the filmmaker asserts that “it can’t just be seen from a different angle.” The concept of twins, he claims, felt like a “trope,” but he argues that the placement of the reveal in the film alters the plot. Explaining Every Twist In The Glass Onion
As it relates to the plot, Glass Onion’s Andi twist disclosed a lot and explained the early mystery surrounding Benoit Blanc’s invitation. Although the reason Miles invited Andi to visit his island is unknown, Helen, who hired Miles to solve her sister’s murder, told Blanc about the offer she received. According to Helen, Andi’s discovery in a running car with the garage door locked and indications of sleeping pills in her system was likely a staged suicide. Andi was also discovered with the garage door shut.
Andi told her pals she had what she needed to show in court that they had all lied to protect Miles, so everyone on the island had a reason to kill her before she passed away. Helen was shot due to several circumstances, and the offender was found.
Miles was identified as Andi’s murderer, having also slain Duke Cody (Dave Bautista) during the escape.
Blanc emphasized that Duke did not unintentionally grab Miles’ glass; rather, he received a drink that contained pineapple juice, which led to a fatal allergic reaction. Duke was killed so that he could inform no one else of Andi’s dying after he informed Miles about her passing. Additionally, viewers realize that Miles was the one who shot Helen with Duke’s stolen gun. Although Miles was not seen departing for prison, the ending implied that his friends would expose his crimes.
Johnson has delighted audiences with inventive murder mysteries in the original Knives Out and its follow-up. It may surprise you to find that he was initially opposed to one of Glass Onion’s most shocking turns.
