Warner Bros. Discovery and Netflix are the first to start the celebration. At the same time, Hollywood waits to learn which studios may or may not be giving Golden Globes events before or after the recovery of the major HFPA awards gala on January 10.
Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca, the heads of Warner Bros. and New Line Films, will be hosting a celebration to commemorate Elvis Presley’s birthday on January 8 at venerable nightclub The Formosa, according to invitations that just sent out. Austin Butler, who played Elvis, and Baz Luhrmann, the movie director, will be special guests.
Although the invitation does not mention the Globes, held two nights later, “Elvis” enters the ceremony with three nominations, including best drama picture, Austin Butler for the actor, and Baz Luhrmann for the director, motion picture.
The “Elvis” party will take place at the same time as Netflix’s “Celebration Toast” for 2023, which will be held at Catch Steak on La Cienega Boulevard.
Again, the Netflix invitation makes no mention of the Globes. It’s a clue that studios are edging closer to accepting the show’s return but aren’t quite ready to market their Globes parties as blatantly as they have in the past.
W magazine is another contender. On January 6, at a private estate, Sara Moonves, editor-in-chief of the fashion magazine, and Nicolas Ghesquière, creative director of Louis Vuitton, will throw a small dinner to start the award season. Before the pandemic, W’s pre-Golden Globes party at Chateau Marmont on Friday before the telecast was a must-attend for A-Listers, so I’m confident that the guest list for this year’s event will feature top contenders and Hollywood’s sexiest VIPs.
The days and nights preceding the presentation were jam-packed with events until the pandemic and before NBC momentarily canceled the Globes telecast amid accusations against the HFPA owing to unethical behavior and requests to diversify its ranks. Most studios hosted post-parties in the restaurants and ballrooms of the Beverly Hilton as well as other popular locations close by.
Jerrod Carmichael, an Emmy winner, will host the Globes when they return. He will direct the 3 hour broadcast from the Beverly Hilton. NBC and Peacock will show the program live. Collins and Dionne Harmon will serve as executive producers for the film, which Dick Clark Productions and Jesse Collins Entertainment, in collaboration with the HFPA, will produce.
