“Lift Me,” Rihanna’s comeback song from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, has propelled the pop queen to the Golden Globes for best original music. However, she faces heavy competition: Lady Gaga got their nomination for her third Grammy for her performance of “Hold My Hand” from Top Gun: Maverick, while Taylor Swift is up for her first with her fourth career nomination.
On Monday, the Grammy-winning artist won the nomination for best original song and best songwriting. Rihanna competes for the prize alongside Black Panther director Ryan Coogler, composer Ludwig Göransson, and Afrobeats singer Terms.
Gaga got a nomination for best actress in FX’s American Horror Story: Hotel in 2016 and best original song in A Star Is Born in 2019. She’s up for best actress in a television miniseries or film and best original music.
Swift created “Carolina” from Where the Crawdads Sing on her own, and she has previously nominated for best original song for Cats’ “Beautiful Ghosts,” One Chance’s “Sweeter Than Fiction,” and The Hunger Games’ “Safe & Sound.”
“Naatu Naatu,” an Indian Telugu-language song created by M. M. Keeravani from the action movie RRR, rounds out the five contenders. Simultaneously, Guillermo del Toro, Alexandre Desplat, and Roeban Katz got selected for their work on Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio’s “Ciao Daddy.”
Desplat is a double nomination, as he is also up for best original score for his work on Pinocchio.
However, Hildur Gudnadóttir has the potential to make further history by winning her second Globe in the category. The classically trained Icelandic cellist nominated for her work on Women Talking.
In addition, she made history at the 2020 Globes by becoming the first woman in 19 years to win the best original soundtrack for Joker. Gudnadóttir has also won an Oscar, a Grammy, and an Emmy; they set a record by finishing the HBO miniseries Chernobyl and Joker in six months.
Other nominees for best original score include Babylon’s Justin Hurwitz, The Fabelmans’ John Williams, and Banshees of Inisherin’s Carter Burwell. The 2023 Golden Globes will be broadcast on NBC on January 10, 2023.
